At the Metro

a city once full of promise
you were one of those who thought so
one of those who clawed your way up
squeezed yourself in to get here
how could you have known what you would see here
or the indifference it would take to survive it
the city is ruthless in selecting its survivors
the sick and starving you have had to step over
devoured by your own struggle to stay alive
the faces you have pushed into the shadows
the screams you have muffled
to keep from suffocating in your own powerlessness
you've seen enough to know there is nothing you can do here
nothing but let Manila, with all her secrets, swallow you whole
